The Isle of Harris is part of the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) situated off the West Coast of Scotland. Given the remote location getting to the island needs some careful planning.
Most visitors tend to arrive by ferry and Caledonian MacBrayne run a number of vehicle ferry routes both between the Western Isles and to the Scottish mainland.
The ferry from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris runs several times a day during the summer months and most of the week in winter on a reduced timetable. During the summer months, ferry crossings are very busy and sell out quickly, especially on Saturdays so it is advisable to book in advance. You can find the timetables here. The Ullapool to Stornoway ferry is another route option to the Isle of Lewis from where it is approximately an hour’s drive to the house.
The nearest airport is just outside Stornoway, approximately an hour’s drive from the house.
If travelling by air there are regular flights to Stornoway airport from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness run by Flybe, and many other destinations from other operators HIA, Eastern Airlines and Logan air. From these destinations there are connecting flights to most major airports. Details can be found by clicking on the highlighted links above.
There are several car hire companies based in Stornoway. Lewis Car Rental and Carhire Hebrides can both deliver cars to the airport or to the ferry terminal in Stornoway. MacKinnon Self Drive has a wide range of cars available for hire with local delivery, and can supply a car at the airport through Stornoway Car Hire.
Once on the Island there are regular coaches running out of the car park at Tarbert to various destinations on the island and further afield.
